Think about healthy New Year’s resolutions before overindulging at holiday meals!

As we approach the new year, it’s time to think about those traditional New Year’s resolutions. If leading a healthier lifestyle and getting back in shape is on your list, you’ll want to talk to us about our how to improve your health as we enter 2014. The first place to start is with a thorough physical examination designed to establish your health baseline. This will help you assess which areas you want to concentrate in, whether it’s improving your diet and nutrition, increasing your strength and agility, or reducing stress in your life.

A thorough physical is highly recommended for those of you looking to change your lifestyle for the better in the coming year. Contact us at (713) 529-9224 to learn more and to set up an appointment.

Get Active, Get Swimming, Get Healthy

The Houston area has many heated pools that are ideal for getting active during the winter months

Get Active, Get Swimming, Get Healthy

Get Active, Get Swimming, Get Healthy

This is also the time of year when the cold and rainy Houston weather makes it harder to get motivated to go outside and get active.

We have a suggestion: why not start swimming? Whether you’re an expert swimmer, beginner or have never had the opportunity to learn how to swim, there are many options in Houston for participating in this highly rewarding and healthy activity.

Healthy Choice: Swimming at Dad’s Club

Houston is home to one of the premier facilities for training high level swimmers that compete all the way up to the Olympics level. We’re speaking of course of Dad’s Club, which, since 1946, has promoted swimming in the Spring Branch area. Don’t be intimidated. They offer swimming activities for all ages and abilities. So if you haven’t learned to swim or you need to brush up on your skills you can visit their website and sign up for some lessons or join a competitive swim team.

Healthy Choice: Sgt. H2O’s Aquatic Boot Camp

Sgt. H2O’s Aquatic Boot Camp is modeled after military deep sea training programs. The organization, which began in Dallas, has expanded to several cities, including Austin and now Houston. You can take Sgt. H20’s Aquatic Boot Camp classes at Dad’s Club (see next section) or at facilities up north in Conroe, or south of Houston in Webster (Galveston County). The focus here is on extreme fitness, and it’s a great way to get yourself into top shape.

Healthy Choice: It’s fun to swim at the Y-M-C-A

Houston's Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA offers swimming lessons.

The Winter season is also a great time get reacquainted with the YMCA. They have locations all over Houston, including many with swimming facilities, such as the Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA. To narrow down your choices, you’ll want to use their website to search for swimming lessons or swimming exercise programs at a facility near you.

Experience healthy benefits of Yoga

If you want to stay dry, but still increase your flexibility and reduce stress, yoga might be the right choice for you. But if you don’t know anything about yoga it may seem very intimidating at first. What to do? We recommend trying a free yoga class from the friendly folks at the Resurrection MCC Church. They’ll even provide use of a free yoga mat for your first visit while you check out what it’s all about. All shapes and sizes are welcome in this nonthreatening, welcoming environment. You can visit their website or, even better follow their Twitter feed to find out the times for yoga at their facility on W. 11th Street just west of TC Jester.

Take a cruise, a flight or just enjoy a ‘staycation’… but get checked out first. Give call at (713) 529-9224 to schedule a doctor checkup.

Are your shots up to date? Come in for a doctor checkup and get vaccinated for peace of mind.

Now is also the perfect time to hop on a plane or escape on a vacation cruise out of Galveston. But if you are going somewhere tropical, you should come in first for a quick doctor checkup.

We offer all kinds of preventive treatments and vaccinations. So if you’re contemplating a trip overseas, come talk to us about any medical precautions you might want to consider, including vaccines and boosters for the flu, viral pneumonia, tetanus, hepatitis, meningitis, whooping cough or preventive treatments for tropical diseases like malaria.

And, if you have traveled overseas recently and have come back experiencing problems, now is the time to come in and get checked out. Just give us a call at (713) 529-9224.

Are tourists bringing tropical diseases back to Houston?

A recent study by Baylor College of Medicine researchers determined that Dengue Fever has been detected in Houston.

You may have read in the news that visitors and residents returning to Houston from overseas may be bringing back some tropical diseases.

A recent study by Baylor College of Medicine researchers determined that Dengue Fever (typically found in Mexico, India, Indonesia and Brazil) has been detected in Houston. Be cautious and try to avoid mosquitoes wherever you travel – even when enjoying a ‘staycation’ right here at home in Houston.

Unlike malaria and other tropical diseases, Dengue Fever can also be transmitted by the type of mosquitoes commonly known as Asian Tigers. You’ll probably recognize these particularly aggressive mosquitoes as the ones that chase you relentlessly from the front door of your home all the way to the inside of your car.

Unfortunately Asian Tiger mosquitoes are active throughout the day, not just in the morning and at dusk. If you have concerns about any fever, rash or flu symptoms or any general health questions at all – give us a call at (713) 529-9224. You can come in for a quick visit and we’ll get you checked out right away.
