What about Obamacare health insurance?
Act now to get January coverage
For those of you planning to enroll in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, now is a critical time to initiate enrollment if you want coverage to start on January 1, 2014. The deadline for January 1 coverage has been extended to December 23, but we recommend enrolling as soon as possible. If you have trouble accessing the official website healthcare.gov you might want to try late at night or early in the morning.
We also recommend making contact with the insurance company with whom you choose to initiate coverage so that you can confirm that your enrollment has been transferred to them correctly through the website. You will want to maintain close contact with them through the payment process until you receive your insurance identification card to make sure everything gets processed correctly.
The Affordable Care Act has brought sweeping changes to the insurance market, and there are tremendous benefits in the law for patients, including no more discrimination or cancellations based upon pre-existing conditions. It also eliminates lifetime expense caps on insurance coverage, which is particularly important for those with major medical issues or long-term illnesses. Pricing discrimination between men and women is no longer allowed, and many treatments, including preventive and wellness procedures, are now required to be covered.
However, these changes, which are designed to help provide coverage to those with pre-existing conditions or long-term illnesses, come at a cost. It seems that in order to keep the premiums reasonable, many of the plans offered through the official website healthcare.gov have fairly high deductibles and co-pays.
If you are looking to choose a plan which includes coverage for visits to Dr. Brewton’s office, you will probably find many options available to you. For example, if you select one of the Blue Cross plans that allows you to choose your doctor, that will provide you the most options. (We accept Blue Cross / Blue Shield insurance coverage.) It’s always a good idea to call us at (713) 529-9224 to confirm your options.
