As you may be aware, my practice has a long history of treating and teaching prevention of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV and Hepatitis. I have long been a proponent of honest and direct safer sex education.
Get Regular HIV Testing in the Privacy of Our Office
Knowing your HIV status through regular testing is important. We now offer rapid HIV tests in the privacy of my office, and we encourage you to come in and get tested regularly.
If you or your partner receives a positive test, you will want to know that I am credentialed by the American Academy of HIV Medicine, which awarded me their HIV Expert™ credential.
If you test negative for HIV, I encourage you to continue practicing safer sex in order to prevent transmission of the disease.
Truvada (PrEP) is Now Available by Prescription to Help Prevent HIV Transmission
You should also be aware that there is a new pre-exposure treatment which helps protect HIV negative persons from getting the virus. This is Truvada.
You may have heard of Truvada before. It’s an anti-retroviral drug combo comprised of tenofovir and emtricitabine, created by the drug manufacturer Gilead. This drug combination has been used to treat patients with HIV.
Back in July 20, 2012, the FDA approved the use of Truvada for HIV negative persons as well. In this case, the drug functions as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), meaning it can inhibit transmission of the HIV virus. In other words, HIV-negative people who take Truvada each and every day can significantly reduce the chance that they will contract HIV.
Schedule a Counseling Session with Dr. Brewton to Discuss Truvada and Your Health
If you think you could benefit from this additional protection from contracting HIV, you should schedule a counseling session with me. Like many other drugs, Truvada requires monitoring via blood tests every three months.
But if you are in a higher risk group for contracting HIV, such as being a partner with an HIV-positive person, you may want to talk to us and discuss the options available to you. Call the office at (713) 529-9224 to set up an appointment.
